Why did my QR code stop working?
A QR code stops working for one of four reasons: the service that hosts it expired a trial or plan and deactivated the code, a free scan cap was reached, the destination URL itself went dead, or the printed code was too low-contrast or too small to scan. The first two only affect dynamic codes; a static code can only fail on the last two.

1. The service expired a trial or plan
Most dynamic QR generators deactivate your codes when a free trial ends or a subscription lapses. qr-code-generator.com, for example, turns off dynamic codes made during its 14-day trial once the trial is over; scanning then shows a service page, not your destination.
The fix: reactivate by upgrading the same account that created the code - the code data is usually retained. To avoid it entirely, use a static code (nothing to expire) or a provider with a permanent free tier rather than a trial.
2. A free scan cap was hit
Some free tiers cap scans per code. QR Tiger's free dynamic codes stop resolving after 500 scans. A campaign that takes off can silently pass the cap, and the code goes dark while the poster is still on the wall.
The fix: upgrade to lift the cap, or move the code to a provider whose free tier has no scan cap. Kilo QR's free dynamic link has no scan limit.
3. The destination URL died
If the page the code points to was deleted, moved, or its domain lapsed, the scan resolves but lands on a 404 or a parked domain. This can hit static and dynamic codes alike, because the problem is the destination, not the code.
The fix: for a dynamic code, edit the destination to a live URL - no reprint needed. For a static code, you have to generate and print a new code, which is the main reason to use a dynamic code for anything durable.
4. Print quality or contrast was too low
A code that never scanned reliably usually has a physical problem: too small for the scan distance, low contrast (light modules on a busy photo, or inverted colours), a logo covering too much of the data area, or ink bleed and glare on the printed surface.
The fix: keep strong dark-on-light contrast, leave the quiet-zone margin around the code, size it for the scan distance (a rough rule: scan distance divided by ten is the minimum code width), and test the printed proof before a full run. Kilo QR's designer flags low contrast and oversized logos with a live scan-safety score.
How to make a QR code that cannot expire
A static QR code encodes its content directly - the URL, text, or Wi-Fi details live inside the pattern. There is no short link in the middle, no account, and no plan, so there is nothing to expire and no company that can switch it off. Free Kilo QR static codes never expire for exactly this reason.
The trade-off is that a static code cannot be edited or tracked: to change where it points, you print a new one. A dynamic code adds a short link so you can re-point and measure it, but that link depends on the provider staying up and on the right plan.
Before you print, check two things: is this code static or dynamic, and if dynamic, does its free tier expire or cap scans? For a fixed destination, a static code is the durable choice. For a destination that may change, use a dynamic code on a provider with a permanent free tier - not a trial.
QR codes not working - FAQ
Do QR codes expire?
Static QR codes do not expire - the destination is encoded in the code itself. Dynamic QR codes can stop working, because they rely on a short link the provider controls, which may be deactivated when a trial or plan ends. Why does my QR code go to an error or "inactive" page?
That is the signature of a deactivated dynamic code: the provider expired the trial or plan and now serves a service page instead of your destination. Reactivating the original account usually restores it.Can I fix a printed QR code without reprinting it?
Only if it is a dynamic code - then you edit the destination and the same printed code resolves to the new URL. A static code cannot be changed after printing, so fixing it means printing a new one.How do I stop my QR code from breaking again?
Use a static code for a fixed destination so nothing can expire, or a dynamic code on a provider with a permanent free tier if you need to edit it later. Print with strong contrast, a clear margin, and a size matched to the scan distance, and test the proof first.
