Animated QR codes - frequently asked questions

  • Can a QR code be animated?
    Yes. The scannable pattern itself stays readable while the decoration around and within it moves - a rotating frame, cycling finder-eye colours, a gradient that sweeps through the modules. Kilo QR exports the result as a GIF or an MP4 for use on screens.
  • Do animated QR codes still scan?
    Yes. Animation is applied to colour and framing, not to the data modules or the quiet zone around them, so a camera reads an animated code the same way it reads a static one. The designer shows a live scan-safety score while you style it.
  • Can I print an animated QR code?
    No - paper can't move. Animated exports are for screens: social posts, slides, video, digital signage, email. For a print run, download the same design as a static PNG or SVG; it encodes identical content and scans the same.
  • What file formats can I export?
    Animated QR codes export as GIF or MP4. Static versions of the same design export as PNG or SVG.
  • Is designing an animated QR code free?
